Sunspots Treatment

If dermatologists were to choose just one advice for all, sunscreen would be it.

Sunlight has many health benefits: it stimulates Vit.D3 production which is essential for our immune system, it also boosts and normalizes our mood. Nonetheless, too much sun can cause unpleasant side effects such as dark spots on the skin, and, in some cases, dangerous melanoma.

Sunspots, the little brown dots or blotches on the skin, are the result of a prolonged overexposure to sun’s UV rays without protection. The artificial source of ultraviolet rays, such as from tanning bed, can also cause a formation of sunspots. Prolonged overexposure to the sun causes premature aging of the skin, one of the signs being the dark spots. Freckles might be youthful and attractive, sunspots – not as much.

They are areas of hyperpigmentation and are also called solar lentigines, liver spots, age spots. Although the causes of localized hyperpigmentation might be different, the cosmetic treatment approach is pretty much the same.

It is recommended to consult a doctor to determine the type of hyperpigmentation and the optimal treatment options, which may include laser therapy, dermabrasion, and chemical peels.

Laser therapy destroys the cells that generate the extra pigment. Chemical peels and dermabrasion are eliminating the top layer of the skin, as result of which a new layer is regenerated.

The treatment of sunspots is proven to be efficacious in creating a more even-toned, thus youthful, skin appearance.

Individual results may vary.
